AIDS-related dementia

* Synonyms: HIV encephalopathy, HIV encephalitis, AIDS dementia complex
* Thought to be due to the direct effect of HIV on the brain
* Full-blown disease usually in the severely immunosuppressed
* Frequency has declined with HAART, however, lesser forms of motor and cognitive disease continue to occur
* There are no pathgnomic findings; often, the diagnosis is made by exclusion.
