HIV-infected microglial nodules, and multinucleated giant cells, with reactive astrocytosis, characterize HIV encephalopathy. Here, mononuclear cells, stained in brown, form a perivascular inflitrate. In HIV encephalopathy, there is no infection of neurons or oligodendrocytes.
